When thinking about Shetland ponies, the image of a children’s friend is never far away…quite understandable since only few can resist his charms.

Nevertheless, history has proved that this little fellah served more than one goal.
On the Shetland Isles (very near to Scotland), his natural habitat, he was used by the local people during their agricultural and peat digging activities.
The inhospitable climate and wild scenery probably resulted in the pony’s small size and compact anatomy: only the strongest were able to adapt and, hence, survive.
