As was to be expected: one doesn’t become Belgian Champion overnight. Years of hard labour and tough selections precede such a magnificent outcome. There are many good candidates but only one is the best. How does it all work?

Every pony in from our stud has an official passport, issued by the Belgian Shetland Pony Stud Book Society (see our chapter ‘Belgian Stud Book’) containing, among many other things, the pony’s genealogy. Between the age of 3 and 8 years every pedigree pony needs to undergo a detailed inspection, carried out by the Stud Book to see if the animal complies with the breed standard in order to get fully licensed (on the condition that his parents, grand-parents and great-grandparents, 3 generations) have already been approved.
